Perfume and Aromatherapy
We all know that certain fragrances smell wonderful, and that we may associate a person with a particular scent. Did you know, however, that perfume and aromatherapy can actually affect a person's mood or health? Perfumes, home fragrances and aromatherapy products can bring back memories of a favorite childhood scent, or make you feel relaxed and calm after a busy day.
How Essential Oils Affect a Person's Mood or Health
Essential oils are strong fragrances that are made from pressed trees, plants or flowers. They can be used many different ways: a drop of oil into your bath to soothe your stress, a fragrance oil stick that you can roll onto your skin as perfume, or in a home burner that will distribute the scent throughout your home. Since essential oils can be quite strong, you want to find one that doesn't overpower your environment.
Some experts say that our brain waves change with certain smells, which explains why you can feel cozy and warm with a cinnamon or vanilla smell, or energized by fresh lemon. In fact, some therapists are even incorporating aromatherapy into their client's sessions to help calm them when they feel anxious or nervous. Your memory stores information about smells, and when your mind is triggered by a particular scent, it connects with that memory. Perfumes, candle fragrances or essential oils can also trigger negative memories – if you associate the smell of lavender soap with an abusive mother, you will feel angry or hurt when you smell it on another person.
How Do You Choose An Essential Oil?
Before you choose an essential oil, think about the feeling you want to evoke. If you want to use a home fragrance oil that will calm you down in a stressful situation, look for sage, chamomile or mandarin. If you want to be energized, seek out citrus essential oils (while technically called expressed oils, they have joined the family of essential oils in many stores), basil or rosemary. If you're in the mood for romance, look for vanilla, patchouli and jasmine to jump start your love life.
The best thing to do is to visit an aromatherapy shop that sells fragrance oils, home fragrances and candles, and speak to someone who understands how different oils work. You want to choose a perfume or home fragrance that not only smells nice, but will evoke the mood you want in your everyday life.
